Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less.

Mid life. Heavy on nostalgia. Direct and tell stories, make photographs, make books, make commercials. Documented an incredible movement in skateboarding in the early 1990’s; somehow that always keeps coming back. I saved a lot of artifacts and ephemera. Had profound mentors/friends who now look down from above.

What’s your secret or favorite artist hang-out spot?

It’s no secret, but museums and galleries where you can see and feel art up close are infinitely inspiring. So is a solo morning movie at the cinema with a coffee.

How do you like your eggs?

Italian fried with medium yolk.

Most valuable lesson learned in art school?

Art history can calibrate your intellect and taste and create discourse to find connection and community. Then you simply have to find and use your own unique voice. You don’t abandon that learned knowledge, but you have to put it away knowing that every artist has their own path.

Letting influences exist subconsciously is a goal.

Most valuable lesson you didn’t learn in art school?

Artists feel the world with an often- crippling intensity. Look for a partner to balance your sensitivity and see you clearly through the ups and downs. Look for that same partner to receive your focus and selfless attention to find your own ego balance.

Any hard-won art world lessons?

No one will promote or give voice to you and your work better than yourself. You will find cheerleaders and advocates, but only you can give an authentic voice to your work, and that definitely does not mean talking specifically about said work.

What is the most beautiful thing in the world?

A child taking their first breath. Holding the hand of a loved one as they take their last. It’s the highest honor to be there when someone arrives and when someone leaves.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Physical media and art books. I always think I have more shelf space than I do.
