Simplicity and elegance in form is sometimes difficult to achieve on a large scale, yet Mike Vegas does just that in his new solo show at West LA College art gallery. Working with very basic materials including untreated wood and small frosted glass jars, Vegas creates what appear to be altar-like structures reminiscent of a Cildo Meireles fantasy where the constructions loosely reference a more complicated idea. In Payday for example, the jars punctuate the letters on the sign as though they were flashing light bulbs in a burlesque show, proving that Vegas’ has a feel for the theatrical.
