Platforms & Paint
at The Gabba Gallery
The famous and sometimes infamous painter Joan Mitchell had a particular pet peeve about being called a “Lady Painter.” “So what if the painter happens to be female, why make a big deal out of it?” she once questioned and yet in 2014 it is still a big deal, in a positive way however, to continue to showcase women as artists rather than as the subjects of art, as is the case with Gabba Gallery’s recent “Platforms & Paint” show where artists like Essi Zimm deliver a series of stunning images that are both raw and contemporary—animal iconography, fierce and unsettling. You go girls!
