. . .
This conversation was conceived of by Lisa Diane Wedgeworth after she was asked during a studio visit, “What conversations are you having with other Black women abstract painters in Los Angeles?” What started as a casual conversation between friends will continue as a more in-depth discussion –online— in this presentation hosted by Flux Art Space.
Maintaining disciplined studio practices, these artists experiment with and push their materials, contributing to the lineage of abstract painting while acknowledging and honoring the work of those who came before them—Sam Gilliam, Howardena Pindell, Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Norman Wilfred Lewis, and Mildred Thompson, to name a few.
Many of the artists are teaching artists who continue to teach at colleges, universities and art schools in Southern California. They have noteworthy exhibition histories and have received recognition for their work. Holly Tempo and Lisa Diane Wedgeworth are two of this year’s recipients of the prestigious 2019-2020 City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship for visual arts. June Edmonds was a recipient of the COLA Individual Artist Fellowship in 2017-2018 and was recently awarded the inaugural Aware Prize at the Armory Show 2020. Adrienne DeVine’s window installation, Wire, Raffia, Shadows, will be on view this summer at Flux Art Space, Long Beach, from August, 1 – 29, 2020.
The moderators are leaders in the art scene in Southern California. Dr. jill moniz is a writer, independent curator and the Academic Curator at Pomona College Museum of Art. Isabelle Lutterodt is a visual artist herself, and Director of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park.
