SANTA MONICA, CA – Artist Luigia Martelloni has organized a group of artists, many from the 18th Street Arts Center-run studio hangar building at the Santa Monica Airport as well as other local Los Angeles artists, to hang an outdoor exhibition on Airport Ave, on the fencing and grounds outside of 3026 and 3050. The artwork, which will encompass a wide range of mediums, from painting and sculpture to installation, will be available for drive-by or socially-distanced viewing for a month, from May 30 – June 30, 2020.
Martelloni writes: “Since March, we have been living through unprecedented apocalyptic crises as a result of the coronavirus, experiencing paradigm shifts that have never before happened in modern history on this scale. Sometimes it feels like we are in a science fiction movie, but perhaps science fiction anticipated reality…
But there is also a positive side, a beneficent silence, in this awkward isolation. It can become a valued time with ourselves and others, maybe allowing us as a community of artists to be even more creative, while isolated in our studios or at home. We can catch up on things, rediscover inspirations, respond and imagine a new world beyond the virus. Art is always open and in the new normal, we must create in order to recover and rebuild, and assemble the world we want to see.
The silver lining is a reflection of our time, expanding our creativity, feeling more empathy and awareness for our planet. As artists, we are fortunate to hold on to our art, something that is part of our existence. So we offer that to anyone who might drive or stroll by (masks on and six feet apart) and experience the work being created during this unprecedented time.”
Viewers are asked to follow the LA County COVID-19 guidelines, wear a mask at all times, stay 6 feet apart, and to not gather in groups.
Participating artists include: Michele Castagnetti, Gregg Chadwick, Mara Colecchia, Claudia Concha, Lawrence D’attilio, Julia Michelle Dawson, Lola Del Fresno, Alexandra Dillon, David Eddington, Joshua Elias, Francesca Forquet, Jane Goren, Yossi Govrin, Sheila Karbassian, Jeremy Kidd, Deborah Lynn Irmas, Susie McKay Krieser, Luigia Gio Martelloni, Crystal Michaelson, Ameeta Nanji, Gary Palmer, Sabine Pearlman, Elham Sagharchi, Daniela Schweitzer, Melinda Smith Altshuler, Emily Van Horn, Alberto Vannetti, Clay White, Joan Wulf, Rebecca Youssef
