LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes explores the history and contemporary experiences of Afrolatinidad in Los Angeles through art, photographs, and personal objects in “afroLAtinidad: mi casa, my city.” In the exhibition, visitors enter a recreated Afro-Latinx home and understand how this vibrant yet underrepresented community is central to Los Angeles culture. The first of its kind in a major institution, this exhibition is co-curated by Walter Thompson-Hernández and Mariah Berlenga-Shevchuk and funded by California Humanities. Opening during Black History Month, “afroLAtinidad: mi casa, my city” is presented in conjunction with “Sula Bermúdez: Neither Fish, Flesh, nor Fowl,” curated by Mar Hollingsworth, Visual Arts Curator and Program Manager, at the California African American Museum.

An opening reception for “afroLAtinidad: mi casa, my city” will take place on Saturday, February 21 from 5pm-7pm. Enjoy small bites, DJ Rich Spirit Revelli and a guest performance by Afro-Peruvian educator and choreographer Nadia Calmet.

The exhibition will be on view February 22, 2020 through July 20, 2020.
