Studio 203 is pleased to announce their official opening reception on Sunday, February 9, 2020. Featuring new work by Aneesa Shami in the front gallery and an open studio with work in-progress, this event will celebrate the beginning of Studio 203’s programming.
Toward a new mythos shares Shami’s journey of creating a personal mythology through reclaimed fabric appliqué tapestries. This exhibition will include her “Something Sacred” series, in which the artist combines her memories of visiting Lebanon with Islamic folklore to create abstract landscapes. Larger-scale tapestries in her new body of work will also be on view.
Studio 203 is an artist-run space in Los Angeles. Located in a unique commercial building, the Studio operates as a white-walled gallery in the front and a working studio in the back. Our vision is to support fellow artists by providing an affordable platform in Los Angeles to help them follow their dreams. We collaborate with forward-thinking individuals to create exhibitions, host workshops and shape culture. Founded by Aneesa and Grant Zizzo, and is the current site of Aneesa Shami Studio.
Aneesa Shami is a Los Angeles-based artist connecting to the collective unconscious through drawing, collage, weaving, crochet and knitting. Driven by a love for repetitive mark-making, layers of material and process build each piece and lend the impression that there is more depth to the surface than what the eye sees.
