LAURA KARETZKY
Ratio: Poems
October 26 – December 7, 2019

Lora Schlesinger Gallery is proud to present Ratio: Poems, Laura Karetzky’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery featuring new paintings. The exhibition opens with an artist’s reception Saturday October 26th from 4-6pm, and is on view through December 7, 2019.

Laura Karetzky’s Ratio: Poems is a continuation of her “embedded” series, analyzing the digital channels through which information travels and the exchange between multiple points of engagement. Karetzky has a particular fascination with the iPhone, which has become integral to the dynamics of society’s interactions and is largely responsible for changing the landscape of communication. The paintings explore the recursive portrait that occurs in a virtual transaction, like a FaceTime call, and probes the space between relationships as we struggle to stay connected. Navigating a convergence of spaces across several vantage points, she searches for the intersection where a broader sense of identity emerges. The crux of her investigation is in the nature of the embedded window, which serves as a portal for information transference, and in effect, transforms each painting into a diptych.

Laura Karetzky’s work has been exhibited in Europe, New York City, Los Angeles, Washington DC (Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery), and was recently part of the traveling exhibition UNLOADED, which addressed gun violence in the US. Awards and residencies include a Yaddo Fellowship (2011), a Milton and Sally Michel Avery endowed Fellowship at Yaddo (2014), a ESKFF Residency at Mana Contemporary (New Jersey, 2017), and the Eric Fischl Award of Distinction from The New York Academy of Art (2009). She was recently the subject of feature interviews in Art Spiel, Artcritical, Anti-Heroin Chic, and the Argonaut. Her work has been reviewed in the The New York Times, Hyperallergic, American Arts Quarterly, The Brooklyn Paper, and The Washington Post, among others. She has served as a member of the Academic Affairs Committee for New York Academy of Art (2006-2012), and has also been a member of the Brooklyn Information and Culture (BRIC) Contemporary Art Council (2007-). She received her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, a MFA from The New York Academy of Art, and engaged in additional training at the School of Visual Arts, The New York Studio School, the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as extensive study in Florence, Italy.
