“NIGHT WINDOWS,” A SOLO SHOW FROM PROMINENT KOREAN ARTIST HWANG SEON TAE,
IS HIS FIRST-EVER EXHBITION IN THE UNITED STATES
CMay Gallery is pleased to present Night Windows, a solo exhibition of works by South Korean artist Hwang Seon Tae. It marks his first ever show in the United States, and opens with an artist’s reception on Saturday, October 19 from 6-8PM. To be shown are new works from Hwang’s “Lightbox” series, as well as select works that predate his use of the lightbox, and two recent pieces that exhibit a more sculptural approach to the artist’s investigation into light, dimensionality, and representation.
Using glass as both filter and canvas, Hwang’s lightboxes depict architectural line drawings of interiors illuminated by LED light mimicking natural daylight. Hwang’s use of one-point perspective is carefully crafted to provide a framework of stillness. Light is subject, object, and spotlight upon a minimal stage.
Similarly, the artist’s most recent works play with the implicitness of line and space through the manipulation of the physical form of the acrylic plate. Dimension is contradicted and confirmed by extension and relief of the surface.
Hwang Seontae was born in South Korea in 1972. He studied fine art at Kyunghee University in South Korea and went on to train in Sculpture at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany, where he completed his postgraduate study, specializing in Glass Art. He has exhibited in South Korea, the USA and Europe.
CMay Gallery is located at 5828 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90036. Its regular business hours are Tues.-Sat., 10AM-6PM. Refreshments will be served at the event on October 19.
