A Comical Primitiveness examines the mental and emotional connections made through the use of everyday materials and handmade processes. Curators Lan Duong and Valerie Wilcox chose artists for this show whose practice revolves around raw materiality.

The light-hearted sensibilities of these works often stands in contrast to the deeper messages about production means. The artists made specific choices to emphasize handmade aspects of their work— moving away from any fabricated aesthetics. The materials used are easily manipulated and thus seem to be formulated with ease. Many of the artists keep the integrity of their materials, such as concrete, plaster, or cardboard intact, which gives the viewer a direct and honest understanding of process.
