Opening Reception: Saturday May 11th, 6-9pm

Brannan Mason Gallery is proud to announce ALTUM, the first Los Angeles solo exhibition by Bay Area artist Micah Crandall-Bear.

ALTUM features new acrylic paintings by Crandall-Bear rendered in soft delineations of sky, earth and sea. Fundamentally abstract, the paintings layer gauzy sections of muted color. They imply impressionistic shifts in light at dusk or dawn and allow the viewer to peer into thoughtful and contemplative spaces. Crandall-Bear uses a ‘wet-on-wet’ technique, pulling on several coats of wet acrylic paint with a squeegee followed by buffing and blending. The process leaves no visible brushstrokes, creating seamless gradients of color. Inspired by time spent in nature, the Pacific Northwest, and California, the paintings have a locality to them, conjuring specific places and moments. The paintings have great compositional restraint and recent works have more subtle coloration than ever. Crandall-Bear’s paintings are dreamy, atmospheric, inquisitive, and can act as a welcome respite.

Altum is Latin for sublime, deep water, or tide. For this exhibition Brannan Mason Gallery and Micah Crandall-Bear have partnered with Save The Waves. Save The Waves is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting coastal surf ecosystems through a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action. 10% of proceeds from this exhibition will benefit Save The Waves’ work with coastal ecosystems.
