March 8, 2019 Los Angeles, CA – Carla Baratta and Michael Ornstein present a very special two day exhibition, Puro y Sin Nombre, to raise money for Karttos International, a foundation with the goal of helping the most vulnerable in Venezuela. Carla and Michael met while acting on the FX Networks television series Mayans M.C., discovering a mutual love and respect for each other’s art. “Michael’s work reflects his soul, he has an honest and pure style that connects with a deeper side of mankind, something you can’t express with words or define with labels,” says Carla. “Our work is ‘pure and nameless’ and we needed to find a place where we could express that in our own terms. Michael found Manu’s place, and everything just felt perfect, Puro y Sin Nombre was born.”
Puro y Sin Nombre, to be pure and nameless, is the idea that art speaks for itself. Names, labels, text, it all skews a visual medium away from the core of what a work of art is. “Carla talked about how we are so different from other people’s perspectives of who we are.,” says Michael. “Our paintings reflect one idea to ourselves, but other ideas to different viewers as far as identity, emotional states, and what a painting is about. I related immediately to what Carla was saying, it rang perfectly true to me, as far as how I see my work and how I try to live my life. We came together on this show through a deeply natural and organic way.”
The works selected for Puro y Sin Nombre are intimate portraits, approached by each artist with their uniquely fluid styles. Carla’s work is a walk of intuition, a melding of intricate linework and swatches of bright colors, guiding the way to self discovery and exploration. Michael’s paintings are brightly colored works that explode onto the plastic sheeting he uses as canvas; not only do they change with the lighting, but with the ever-evolving state of the viewers, from moment to moment. The two artists together create an invitation to come and be present, free from judgement, purely in the moment.
A portion of proceeds from the sale of all works in Puro y Sin Nombre will go to benefit Karttos International, a foundation with the goal of helping the most vulnerable in Venezuela, lending a helping hand to end the need of basic necessities, ending hunger and above all offering its supportive hand to citizens of Venezuela. “They are a group of people, mostly women, from different nationalities who are working with their fingers and nails to get medicine, food and resources to the people struggling in Venezuela. This organization is really important to me because it is close to my heart and my roots. I find it inspiring how willing and compassionate these women are, they change so many people’s lives. After meeting this organization, I realize that faith and love can move mountains, so for me is an honor have them being a part of this.” – Carla
