The fantastical and curious assemblages of Valerie von Sobel are the rest of meticulous collecting of artifacts, dreaming stories, and carefully executing the work in bronze, lead, gold, pearls, and whatever reveals the inner mind and soul of the artist. Moreover, a number of the works have MP3s embedded with stories that are digitally recorded by an actor, reminiscent of “1001 Nights.”
The works are rarities, as is the artist: a Hungarian refugee in 1956, an actress (with Jimmy Stewart in “Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation,” and other films at 20th Century Fox), and a philanthropist (The Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation.). Once seen, these sculptures are indelible–unforgettable.
On view at Denenberg Gallery Feb 14–April 14, some regular hours, usually by appointment or by chance!
