Lora Schlesinger Gallery is proud to present Sui Getsu Kū Ge, Miya Ando’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition opens with an artist’s reception, Saturday September 8th from 4-6pm, and is on view through October 20, 2018.
A practicing Buddhist, Miya Ando imbues her work with its principles of change and impermanence. Her latest exhibition, Sui Getsu Kū Ge, draws inspiration from the teaching of Zen monk Shunryū Suzuki about the interconnectedness of all things. Ando’s works evoke the natural world, specifically transitory natural phenomena, such as dusk, charred wood, or clouds, in order to cultivate a conscious relationship between the viewer and nature. She creates an interactive visual experience, encouraging the viewer to examine the paintings and sculpture at different vantage points in order to perceive the various changes of light, color, distance, and time, as one would encounter in nature.
A dichotomous approach, Ando blends the natural with the industrial, utilizing the enduring materiality of metal with evanescent scenes of the environment. Ando is known for her self-developed process of painting into the surface of aluminum, which encapsulate both ephemerality and permanence in their subtle, brilliant color gradients. Working across two and three dimensions, Ando’s oeuvre contains abstract painting and sculpture, including large-scale public art pieces that reflect the transitory essence of life.
Miya Ando is an American artist who lives and works between New York City and Los Angeles. Ando’s work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions internationally including The Noguchi Museum, New York, NY; SCAD Museum, Savannah, GA; Shibuya Seibu, Tokyo, Japan; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, NY, Singapore, Hong Kong; and Lesley Kehoe Galleries, Melbourne, Australia. Her work has also been included in extensive group exhibitions at institutions including LACMA, Los Angeles, CA; Bronx Museum, New York, NY; and Queens Museum of Art, New York, NY. Her work is included in the public collections of LACMA and The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), as well as private collections. Ando has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant Award and Commission for The Philip Johnson Glass House, New Canaan, CT.
