Andrew Burgess began creating collages over twenty years ago. Initially inspired by the work of Kurt Schwitters, Burgess’s early collages were made with lo-fi materials such as tissue paper and masking tape, but they gradually began to incorporate all manner of ephemera including ticket stubs, matchbooks, cigarette labels, vintage and found papers, as well as hand-painted and stained papers made by Burgess using ink and acrylic paint.
In his architectural collages, Burgess uses matchbook covers and geometric shapes to construct scenes of cities such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, transforming them into glittering mosaics of color that interrogate the viewer’s perception of spatial depth. His most recent collages are small, intimate studies in abstraction, made with pieces of aged paper and book fabric chosen for their color and patina. The older and more beaten the paper, the more “gem-like” the result. Each collage is a carefully arranged, meticulously ordered set of relationships of color, texture, line, and shape.
