MRR Studio is pleased to present “ She ” California artist Chuck Blackwell’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
In a collection of thirty new paintings, Blackwell explores the strengths and struggles of groundbreaking women throughout history. Blackwell is a master of juxtaposition; beneath an apparent ease, his charming, pastel-colored portraits compel viewers to rethink their distinctly positive subjects through added layers of markings and messages hidden in the paint. Theirs is a raw, honest realization: these women had to fight courageously and tirelessly to assert themselves as individuals and leaders in and beyond their fields.
Painting these remarkable woman has been a profoundly emotional journey for the artist. “ I felt like even after spending so much time studying their images, I was nowhere near understanding their struggle” says Blackwell.
Coined “the he behind She” Chuck Blackwell is charmingly humble and seemingly unaware of his natural talent – even though his work has become widely recognized and collected throughout Los Angeles over the years. When asked about the hopes for this collection, Blackwell states, “Like all paintings, I hope the images cause some sort of emotional response. I want them all to look like a collection of my paintings, but I hope the subjects rise above that and each painting stands out with a personality all its own.”

MRR Studio, known for showcasing their exhibitions in unique venues throughout Los Angeles will be housing “ She ” at The Dollhouse, a grand and stately Victorian Era Home built in 1895, formerly known as Angels Attic. The home was recently restored to the original splendor and is today one of the last two Victorians remaining in Santa Monica. “ She ” will be the first event to be held in the venue since the closing of Angels Attic back in April 2017. The exhibition will run from May 31st through June 27th with an opening reception being held on June 7th.
Everyday leading up to the opening, “She” will be sharing content featuring the art and chosen moments from the show’s remarkable women through Instagram: @she_atthedollhouse. Promotion for the show is being managed by Artful Influence, a brand consultancy that specializes in marketing through creative use of media, brand experience, and influential relationships.
Chuck Blackwell was born in Petal, Mississippi and lives and works in Topanga, California. His work has been the subject of countless group exhibitions including his solo show, “ This” at MRR Studio in 2017.
