Every now and again an artist comes along for whom the process of making art is both revolutionary and reverential. Mark Dutcher’s first solo show in almost five years, entitled “Transfer” is a visually transformative experience punctuated throughout as testaments of personal devotion, love and despair. Dutcher’s eleven paintings modulate an array of emotions and works like the enigmatic and quintessential “Laurie (Green)” 2013, express the multi-dimensionality of grief, in this case celebrating his sister who passed away from cancer earlier this year. The painting is simultaneously spare and lush, and within this spareness is tremendous dignity and presence, the artist’s own and the mirrored, channeled presence of his sister as though her passing was yet another necessary template for Dutcher’s own creative expansion.
