TATABA
ART OPENING – STORE CLOSING

“Treasured Again,” an exhibition of assemblage-art dollhouses by artist and TATABA owner Gilena Simons, will open with a reception on Sunday, March 25 from 3-6PM at TATABA.

Throughout the weekend of March 24-25, there will also be store-closing festivities and special sales at TATABA, which goes on hiatus at the end of April. TATABA will reopen next year as a hybrid art gallery and highly curated vintage shop in an architecturally restored historic building across the street from its current location.

Simons has always been taken with collecting other people’s things – items that were once treasured and then discarded. “I’m fascinated by the stories they could tell if they could talk: Who designed it? Who made it? Who kept it, played with it, wore it, and then let it go? Why?” She began creating one-of-a-kind dollhouses and assemblage art pieces in 2011, and each mixed media work presents a statement on the notion of house, home, and family. As she architects each one, she introduces disparate components that fit together purposefully in a newly invented arrangement. While once upon a time dollhouses might have been made to teach little girls how to be homemakers, Simon’s pieces suggest instead that such notions be swept clean, and that home is the centeredness we each seek to find in life.

Hours for the Art Opening & Store Closing weekend are Saturday, March 24, 11AM-7PM, and Sunday, March 25, 12-6PM. Festive beverages and bites will at the “Treasured Again” opening reception on March 25 from 3-6PM. TATABA was named in the spirit of “Tuesdays And Thursdays And By Appointment.” TATABA is located at 2823 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405.

A portion of proceeds from sales March 24-25 will benefit OUR HOUSE Grief Support Center )http://www.ourhouse-grief.org/), whose mission is to provide the community – children, teens, and adults – with grief support services, education, resources, and hope.
