Alexis Smith

by | Jul 28, 2016

Mining the territory of surrealism, juxtaposing everyday objects to create metaphoric meanings; Alexis Smith, in collaboration with poet Amy Gerstler, have created a visual journey that encompasses a wide array of associations—some witty, some violent. Working mostly in a variety of found media that includes broomsticks, chandeliers, a bucket and a mop, and various other objects, Smith and Gerstler have created a poetic and whimsical dialogue that speaks to larger cultural issues of domesticity. The viewer comes away with no linear narrative, but instead and as such, much more satisfying. Awkward and unsettling, interpretations are posited, but it is up to us as viewers to decide how the story ends. Gerstler’s writings are beautifully evocative, adding an additional layer of meaning to Smith’s already complex visual lexicon, but in a good way.
