• In Town — Los Angeles and environs

Smith reworks familiar images and objects from the courts and prison system to show how deeply these institutions shape daily life. In her new works on paper, she cuts up pages from a children’s coloring book that explains the legal system and weaves the strips into a grid. The friendly scenes break apart into something halfway between abstract pattern and picture, which shows how strange, and how controlling, the book’s lessons really are.
