Guest House is proud to present Field Guide, a group exhibition curated by Aryana Minai featuring Carlos Agredano, Edwin Arzeta, Saffronia Downing, Lauren Goldenberg Longoria, and Nicolas Shake.

In fog we see less, and in that less-ness we are reminded of our desire to orient and to fill what is incomplete, activating a potent longing that might otherwise lie latent. Fog “erases the landscape while revealing the atmosphere”. Drawing from the spirit of Rebecca Solnit’s “A Field Guide to Getting Lost”, this exhibition considers how a surface can function as a compass for the invisible, mapping what cannot be fully seen or held. The materials in this show become vessels for perception, where the sun, the dust, pigment and soil become ways of recording the subtle shifts of atmosphere, memory, and experience. In Field Guide, mapping is not a matter of direction but of devotion to time, to attention, and to the world’s quietest forms of evidence.

The artists in this show trace the delicate interchange between landscape and self. Carlos Agredano captures the environmental residue of smog, soot, and dust all as political testimony, confronting how the air itself bears witness to histories of redlining and environmental neglect. Nicolas Shake works with the desert as a collaborator, exposing found materials to sunlight until they bear the marks of time. His works emerge like mirage; luminous remnants. Edwin Arzeta’s repetitively smudged marks and shrouded objects resist specific recollection, keeping the viewer held in search. Saffronia Downing’s collection and processing of clay found beneath her feet, allows connection with the earth we inhabit and to create a material map. Lauren Goldenberg Longoria’s pieces evoke the sensorial charge of memory lodged deep within material transformation: sifting, soaking, and compressing into densely layered paper forms.

Field Guide gathers artists whose works chart the unseen forces that shape material, memory, and place. Together, their works suggest that to look closely is to get a little lost… to wander through the invisible terrains that quietly hold our histories.

Field Guide will run from November 8th through December 20th at 1019 West Manchester Boulevard, Inglewood, CA 90301.
