Volta’s “Loneliness Triptych”
at Jeffrey Deitch

by | Jul 2, 2025

Friday night director/choreographer Mamie Green (collaborating with writers Stephanie Wambugu, Lily Lady, and Sammy Loren) presented π‘³π’π’π’†π’π’Šπ’π’†π’”π’” π‘»π’“π’Šπ’‘π’•π’šπ’„π’‰, a 30-minute dance/spoken word performance in three consecutive parts, each performed in one of Jeffrey Deitch Gallery’s three large spaces. In each, dancers evoke relational tension using mundane objects (a rug, a mattress, a chair) as key props in metaphorical narratives about life’s complications. Performers are lifted, balanced, rolled, and counterbalanced across them while the stories in the background highlight the idea that motivations are rarely one-note and are instead more akin of interactions in the dark.
Altogether, a lyrical piece that was grim, messy, and human.
