Curated by independent curator nico w. okoro, Against Dystopia features works by ten international artists representing twelve cities across the United Kingdom, Jamaica, and all five regions of the United States. The drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, and textiles in the exhibition inhabit a spectrum of anti-dystopian thought, from mobilizing conceptualism to overcome historic traumas and the precarity of the present, to envisioning future utopias against seemingly insurmountable odds. Filtered through the lens of each artist’s distinct lived experience and approach, these works resist inheritance of the status quo, bravely working against dystopia at all costs.
