Fahrenheit 2024 Artist Panel w/Alex Lukas & Carly Slade
Saturday, March 2, 2024 • 12 –1 PM • In Person

Join us for a panel discussion with Alex Lukas and Carly Slade, two local artists featured in “Fahrenheit 2024.”

During this event, you’ll have the distinct opportunity to get to know the artists’ stories and inspirations behind their artworks. AMOCA Exhibitions Manager Pam Aliaga will guide this discussion with featured Fahrenheit artists, offering thoughtful insights and facilitating sincere conversations.

The panel will be followed by a Q&A session, where you’ll have the opportunity to pose your own questions to the artists. Get to ask the artists those burning questions.

The talk is free with museum admission, which can be purchased at the door when you arrive or in advance through the Eventbrite link; seating may be limited. AMOCA is open 11 AM – 4 PM on Saturday, March 2.

Panelists:

Alex Lukas was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Lukas’ practice is focused on the intersections of place and human activity, narrative, history, and invention. His fieldwork, research, and production reframes the monumental and the incidental through intricate publication series, sculptures, drawings, prints, videos, and audio collages. Lukas’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Kadist Foundation, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art Library, the New York Public Library, and the Library of the Museum of Modern Art. Lukas has been awarded residencies at The Bemis Center for the Arts, the Ucross Foundation, The Center for Land Use Interpretation, The Fountainhead, and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Arts/Industry program, amongst others. He graduated with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and received an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2018. Lukas is currently an Assistant Professor of Print and Publication in the Department of Art at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and organizer of CA53776V2.gallery, an experimental exhibition platform on the dashboard of a 2007 Ford Ranger.

Carly Slade grew up in “Big sky” Alberta, Canada. Her work is influenced by her blue-collar roots and plagued by a concern for the precarious nature of the working class. Using a mix of materials (most often including clay, embroidery, and building supplies), Slade creates dioramas of real places in an unreal perspective. She received her MFA from San Jose State University and her BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts. Slade is currently an Assistant Professor and Area Head at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, in Arcata, CA.
