The exhibition “Shifting Landscapes: Sea Level Rise in Los Angeles and Beyond”, curated by Marisa Caichiolo, is the culmination of an artist/science residency addressing climate change with a specific focus on sea level rise at Building Bridges Art Exchange in Santa Monica. On Saturday November 4 at 11AM, there will be a closing walkthrough with photographer/filmmaker Osceola Refetoff and Dr. Eric Larour, Manager: NASA’s Earth Sciences Division at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Using data from NASA, residents were motivated to engage with scientific concepts, methodologies, and findings, and translate them into thought-provoking artworks.
The visual centerpiece of the exhibition is a large-scale projection of Refetoff’s 8-minute film Sea of Change, which combines drone footage from Svalbard near the North Pole, the immense fracking infrastructure in California’s Central Valley, and the environmentally challenged Salton Sea. These visuals are paired with NASA satellite images of the Earth and NASA graphics depicting various measurements of climate disruption. AI video based on Refetoff’s color infrared photographs are included to envisage future outcomes of sea level rise. Also featured is Refetoff’s first-ever sculpture Plan B, a visual representation of projected sea level rise at Santa Monica Pier, just two miles from the exhibition site.
