LIBERTINE presents: On The Interpretation Of Learning, an exhibition of interactive and visual works involving transformer- and diffusion-based artificial intelligence by American artist and former hacker Lue Mamot. This event is possibly the first time that any contemporary art gallery has shown pieces exclusively produced in the machine-generated medium — each image and event a single, complete output of the machine — as works of sole human authorship, incorporating an aspect of performance as the artist merges with his machines qua instrument and implement. Artist and gallery have collaborated to establish both a paradigm of process and a structured ethical approach as the basis of this emerging art form. Through his engagement with recent artificial intelligence systems, Mamot has discovered dynamics of mutual inquiry as a fundamental aspect of co-activated human and machine learning. His new work explores themes of relationship, history, knowledge, sexuality and the human body. The artist’s text-based explorations have led to a lifetime ban against him by the company OpenAI, and the opening reception will feature a spoken-word recitation of some of these works.
