August 1 – 31st
Anne Goetze
We invite you to view a short film and paintings by Anne Goetze for the month of August at our gallery MACC at The Streets, located in the Streets of Indian Lake shopping area.
Artist Anne Goetze is dedicated to the memory of her aunt and to the Sisters of Visitation Order in Annecy, France. Goetze documented their lives through photography, painting and film in a quest to understand the faith journey of these women. Pray to Love is an exhibition of inspired paintings with spiritual messages and captions written by nuns, along with a short film created by Goetze.
“Through their lives they have shown me, and the world, where true freedom really exists,” says Goetze. “It lies deep in the soul. Freedom comes from within.”
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anne Goetze resides in the countryside of Middle Tennessee. She works in a variety of mediums, depending on how the subject matter speaks to her. Her most cherished subject matter features a series from the beloved town in the French Alps. Her paintings involve a process of joining black and white photography with digital images or film, layered oil paint, and glazes that are sometimes mixed with ashes. The burnt wood ash is symbolic of ashes to ashes, dust to dust, prompted by the passing of her aunt. To expand on the depth of the work, Anne works with the nuns to pair her paintings with a spiritual message written by a nun. The work has a push and pull between impressionism and realism. Goetze’s work is found in the permanent collections of the Tennessee State Museum, Booth Western Art Museum, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Breast Cancer Center, and Psychiatric Hospitals, as well as many personal collections.
Artist Opening Reception Sunday, August 13, 3 – 6 PM

Artist Talk & Film Sunday, August 20, 3 – 5PM
Along with a short film, Anne Goetze will talk about her journey and time spent with the Visitation nuns in Annecy, France, starting with her aunt, Sister Margarite Marie. After years of documentation through photography and video, the work evolved to a series of paintings, Pray To Love. The exhibit began to travel to the existing monasteries in the U.S. and expanded as Goetze documented them as well. Her work is now in the form of a new book due for Fall release.
