The Painting Center is pleased to present an exhibition of new oil paintings and watercolors on paper by Sé McElroy, Everything (at a cost). McElroy confronts the paradox of the Information Age: Everything’s at our fingertips all the time—but what does any of it matter? Working from news, art history, personal photos, and film clips, he jumps in head first and finds moments worth exploring. At times he works from single, unsettling figures. At others he orchestrates fields of visual prompts and memories into collage-like canvasses of shapes, abstractions, and avatars.
Community and isolation, longing and death—McElroy’s themes are universal, but his takes are distinctive. With the focus and precision of a fine-art printmaker, he wants us to slow down and engage.
Sé McElroy is a native New Yorker. He holds a BFA from The Pratt Institute. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
