Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is very pleased to invite you to an artist talk with Lavi Daniel and Kim MacConnel in conjunction with the Daniel’s current solo exhibition, The Fruits of an Enigma. The talk will be held this Wednesday, July 13th, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm PST (4:00 to 5:00 ET), including a Q&A. This is an online event, please register on Eventbrite.
The Fruits of an Enigma is an investigation that begins through the eyes of the artist as a seven-year-old, inspired by the rediscovery of a drawing the artist made at that tender age. Aware that it’s sixty years later, and established in the conviction that there is a coexisting viewpoint of the same enigmatic reality, Daniel seeks to recapture the sense of wonderment within the artistic process that he experienced in his youth. The seventeen works on paper presented in this exhibition are created in soft pastel, the same medium he employed 60 years earlier, which provides a sense of comfort and familiarity in his search of a common figurative language between his present and former self.
Lavi Daniel (b. Los Angeles, 1954) attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. His work has been included in solo and group exhibitions including the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena CA; University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI; Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, CA; Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, CA; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA; Honolulu Academy of Arts, Honolulu, HI; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, CA; among others. His work has been reviewed by the Huffington Post, Los Angeles Times, and LA Weekly. Daniel lives and works in Mendocino, CA.
Kim MacConnel (b. 1946, Oklahoma City, OK) is a pioneer of the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s with a unique visual language that draws inspiration from wide-ranging and multicultural sources such as textile arts, found graphic images, and Henri Matisse. He received his BFA and MFA from the University of California, San Diego, and taught in various capacities in the UCSD Visual Arts Department between 1975 and 1980 and as a Professor of Art from 1987 until his retirement in 2009. MacConnel’s paintings, drawings, and sculpture have been exhibited in museums and galleries domestically and internationally including the Whitney Biennials of 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1985; the Museum of Ghent, Belgium; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; PS 1, Long Island City; the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others. His work is held in several permanent collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
