Curatorial Text:
There is a sense of the unknown when confronted with Cecilia Petasne. An unknown somehow known at a deeper level of our existence. Her forms are reminiscent of an archaic past. A past that is common to all species that once and today and in the future will roam the Earth.
Her drawings and mixed media are a combination of both virtuosity and imagination. Once can’t help but wander into what abyss she plunges to create such images. One thing is sure, she does not dwell in the outskirts of the absolute, no, she swims in the depths of it.
All leading artists get kneed deep in the mud of what it is to be human, to be alive without any obvious reason. She is in a sense a shaman that begets forms and worlds that seem to go on endlessly.
Her work is both whimsical and philosophical and it stabs the onlooker with a primal question: Why us, why now?
The answer we so desperately seek seems to be hidden in the riddles of her work. Perhaps if we stare long enough at her work, we might find it.
