Please join us for the opening of Alex Israel: Desperado, an exhibition featuring a suite of four new editions by Alex Israel. This new series will be presented alongside a selection of related works by the artist.
Desperado exemplifies the approach toward craft and technical artistry that sits at the heart of both the cinematic and print-making mediums. The suite of new works combines digital printing together with Mixografia’s patented handmade paper technique—a first for the studio—pushing the medium to achieve a new, richer sense of textural depth and perspectival illusion. The installation in the gallery, featuring Israel’s Sky Backdrop paintings (made at Warner Brothers) and paired with his bronze Desperado sculptures (based on a found movie prop), reflects upon a world of set-pieces and stage directions to conjure the impression of a fantastical, nostalgic past that might have been captured on 70 millimeter film stock. Through Israel’s lens, we confront a dreamlike snapshot of the American West and of a Hollywood that’s all but gone, never forgotten.
