The Vacant Museum’s upcoming online exhibition, Familiar Strangers will implore artists and viewers to question everything they think they know about themselves. The self-portrait showcase, coming to vacantmuseum.com on 16 July 2021 and featuring over 100 artists from over 30 countries, challenges the concept of the self-portrait as accurate and honest representation, especially in the age of the internet.
Prepare for this exhibition to overturn your faith in the age-old tradition of self-portraiture and to remind you that we live in a world where everyone can be anyone. While perusing this curated collection of faces from around the world, the Vacant Museum will give viewers the opportunity to ask themselves, “are any of these people really who they say they are?”
In order to be featured in the exhibition, all artists must answer the question, “who do you think you are?” upon submission of their self-portrait. Can we truly trust them to answer honestly?
