Cole Case is a gem of an artist who, in his most recent exhibition at Western Project, has demonstrated tremendous sensitivity of the finer elements of life. He is a master of seeing – dead birds, Iberian hounds with pink legs, the variegated lines and shadows that delineate the faces of strangers as well as the personalized expressions of dear friends with equally remarkable results. Working on site, these small and intimate drawings contain both the presence of the specific subject captured as well as Case’s unique perceptivity. Highlights include Case’s drawing of the dog aptly named Human from Pierre Huyghe’s recent exhibition at LACMA and a sad little portrait of a dead bird surrounded by clover.

I’ve been watching Case’s technique and eye evolve over the years, and his journey never fails to provoke. Great stuff.
