The concept of an artist commemorating a particular time and place is always interesting, specifically in this case the border between Tijuana and the U.S. Here, the creation of images becomes a means by which the artist begins to understand his own deeply personal relationship with his past. Gutierrez explores his connection with Mexico and the U.S. border in his recent series of decorative, cartoonish acrylic paintings called “Border Bang.” Gutierrez celebrates the “bootlegged artifact”—the tchotchkes often sold by border vendors—along with an array of cultural references that include the Mexican devil, Mickey Mouse, Futbol, Donald Trump, David Bowie and the color yellow. Through this often comical and sometimes grotesque exploration, we accompany him on the ride of a lifetime.
