Summery Appeal
A Group Show Curated by Doug Harvey
July 15 – August 27, 2017
Reception: July 15, 7-10pm

For its 2017 Summer group show, The Good Luck Gallery has invited artist/critic/curator Doug Harvey to assemble a body of work from several leading Southern California Progressive Art Studios, including Exceptional Children’s Foundation, First Street Gallery Art Center, and HOPE Center for the Arts. Progressive Art Studios are nonprofit programs designed to allow artists with developmental disabilities to create art for exhibition and sale within a supported environment.

“Summer is a symbol of abundance, saturation, ripening, warmth, leisure, and freedom from school — what’s not to love?” says Harvey, “The richness, complexity and vitality of the artworks generated — in abundance — by the artists working in LA’s Progressive Art Studios embodies everything appealing about the creative force at its apex.”

Several of The Good Luck Gallery’s previous exhibitions have featured individual artists from a variety of Progressive Art Studios — most notably 70-something First Street Gallery Art Center artist Helen Rae, whose solo exhibition at NYC’s legendary White Columns opens Sept 9, 2017. Summery Appeal comprises over 50 emerging artists, including such rising stars as Dru McKenzie, Jackie Marsh, Lupe Carbajal, Mark Williams, Julio Galarza, and Darryl Martin — featured in a maximalist salon-style installation, celebrating the creative potency of human consciousness.

In law, a summary appeal is a request to reconsider a judgment that has been made without full consideration of the evidence. If you trust your senses and suspend your preconceptions, Summery Appeal will introduce you to a profusion of creative talent and make you rethink what makes art great.
