The public is invited to attend a thought provoking discussion of the efficacy of building walls as physical and psychological barriers to human connectivity, as monuments in the landscape that trigger memories, destroy alliances, weaken solidarity, impede commerce and cultural exchange, impact families and livelihoods and that change the course of history.

“Penetrating Walls”

FM Fine Art Gallery, 834 N. La Brea Ave., L. A., CA 90038

Distinguished panelists include Peter Tokofsky, Educator at the J. Paul Getty Museum and adjunct professor of German at UCLA who previously hosted the symposium, New Walled Order: The Aesthetics and Politics of Barriers, which brought artists, historians, writers, architects, and social scientists together at the Getty on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of the exhibition Josef Koudelka: Nationality Doubtful. He will speak to: “Can Art Bring Down Walls” with examples from Berlin, Israel, and U.S.-Mexico border where artists have used the wall (mostly the literal surface of the wall) for their artistic efforts to subvert efforts at division.

Sandra Fluke, Social Justice Attorney, who came to national attention on the Rush Limbaugh show for her advocacy for women’s health issues. She will address: “Blocking the Wall” The current federal and state legislation around Trump’s border wall proposal, and efforts to resist it.

Sandy Bleifer, Artist and Activist who, since traveling a large installation work on the subject of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1994/5, has focused on relating her work to larger social issues as a way for society to identify, consider and evolve.

The Moderator is Joes Segal, Chief Curator of the Wende Museum of the Cold War, which is also lending actual pieces of the Berlin Wall for the exhibition.

The Panel Discussion will culminate the exhibition of Sandy Bleifer’s Walls/Graffiti Series. Created between 1982 and 1993, these walls were conceived as a metaphor for the human condition: vulnerable on the surface, yet intrinsically resilient. The Walls Series includes portals/doorways suggesting that facades of walls that serve as barriers can also be penetrated, ameliorating their divisive intention.

The Panel Discussion and subsequent audience participation will be live streamed on Facebook and archived for future reference.
