Lora Schlesinger Gallery is proud to present Moments, Roberto Gil de Montes’ second solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring a new series of works. Gil de Montes has dedicated this show in memory of celebrated gallerist, Jan Baum, who passed away last year. The exhibition opens with an artists’ reception Saturday February 24th from 5-7 pm, and is on view through April 7, 2018.

Roberto Gil de Montes’ latest body of work focuses on moments, the instantaneous periods of time in which extraordinary events can take place and impact an individual. Gil de Montes’ images remind the viewer that the lasting impressions of moments, despite their brief nature, can either enlighten or haunt us. Rather than forget these temporal experiences of life, Gil de Montes memorializes them in the work. From the lightheartedness of “the Mayan boy who sells bracelets and asks for a photograph only to cover his face or the papel picado scattered following a town’s fiesta” to the sobering “flowers and photographs scattered on the floor following a family’s deportation or the forty-three Mexican students who disappeared and later found murdered, burned and disposed at the hands of the Mexican Army,” Gil de Montes reconstructs these scenes from memory or imagination, treating each subject with equal reverence.

Roberto Gil de Montes received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and his Master of Fine Arts from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. His work is included in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Phoenix Museum and The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.

Lora Schlesinger Gallery is also proud to present Around and Around, Ann Chamberlin’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring a new series of paintings.

Ann Chamberlin’s Around and Around centers on small dramas that are offered in process and perpetually unresolved. Some of the scenes are imagined and some are true, but all are presented as questionable circumstances. In Earthquake, the chaos of the disaster is contained by its labyrinth-like composition that extends around page. Without a clear indication of direction, the characters are forced to exist in an infinite state of havoc. In Taxis and Police, Chamberlin reimagines a real event in which taxi drivers were gunned down in her neighborhood. Residents were left to deduce how the event violent event transpired and ultimately had no choice but to move onto the next tragedy, a somber reality of how quickly the world moves from one event to the next often without resolutions.

Ann Chamberlin was awarded the City of Los Angeles Individual Artists’ Fellowship Grant and the J. Paul Getty Individual Artist Grant and was a Fulbright Scholar to Medellín, Colombia. Chamberlin has shown at many museums and galleries including the Gallery at REDCAT, Los Angeles, The Frye Art Museum, Seattle, the Armory Center for the Arts, and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
