“LIFE IN THIS OCEAN,” A SHOW CO-CURATED BY DEIRDRE SULLIVAN-BEEMAN AND KATHY TASLITZ, OPENS AT THE ANNENBERG COMMUNITY BEACH HOUSE ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2-4PM

“Life In This Ocean,” an exhibition of the work of four women artists, opens at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica on Saturday, September 29 with a reception from 2-4PM (the gallery remains open that day until 5:30PM). The show was co-curated by Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman and Kathy Tazlitz. In addition to their work, “Life In This Ocean” features the art of Donna Bates and Lena Rushing, and is on view through January 6, 2019.
In their vision for “Life In This Ocean,” Sullivan-Beeman and Taslitz considered the idea of empowerment for women and girls, exploring universal themes of community and culture though a local, female-centric lens. Told from the point of view of four Los Angeles area artists, the show addresses the role of women in our modern world, referencing history and nature to provide context and evoke thought. In this narrative, women are shown dreaming, persevering, and unafraid. The pieces depict subjects who find strength in the face of adversity, sometimes effortlessly, and other times through meaningful struggle.
The artists share an interest in figurative artwork, paying homage to the multi-faceted landscape of Los Angeles – from edgy urban to serene beach settings – in depicting the feminine experience. The works mostly fall under the rubric of contemporary/pop surrealism, which has its roots in Southern California. There will be an artists’ talk on Thursday, November 1 from 6-8PM.
