South LA Contemporary (SoLA Contemporary) is pleased to present an installation blending art and architecture by (FER) Studio’s Christopher L. Mercier, titled Exploring the Facade of Painting – An artistic inquiry into how we experience and relate to space. Opening concurrently in our back gallery, SoLA is pleased to host the recent works of Korean-American artist Won Sil Kim. Both shows will be on view beginning Saturday, September 14, 2019, with an opening reception to be held that evening from 4-7 PM.

“[My] body of work tries to understand paintings’ history and tradition through contemporary eyes,” Mercier explains. “It attempts to reimagine a painting’s surface not as a clean, white impenetrable flat slate, but instead as something more akin to a building’s façade in a very abstract sense.”

Kim says of her pieces: “My work is largely informed by my rural, Los Angeles mountainside environment, focused on nature where I live or where I had been. The layers in my work enhance the sense of mystic quality and joy of imagination.”
