In mythology a chimera is described as a strange hybrid monster composed of the parts of more than one animal — usually depicted as a lioness with full breasts, with the head of a goat and a tail with a snake’s head. Stas Orlovski astonishingly beautiful and poetic video installation Chimera at PMCA functions as a kind of Macheavelian, metaphorical visual beast that tells a luminous story of constant fluidity and change. Drawing on particular themes that mostly relate to the natural world, Orlovski’s imagery includes floating birds and all manner of flora and fauna reflected back to us in a hand held mirror painted directly onto the gallery wall. The work is tremendously moving and so lovely.
