Robert Heinecken was truly obsessed with modern culture and all its sometimes unfortunate and always ubiquitous vicissitudes. Using a wide range of materials including photography, sculpture, video, printmaking and collage, the artist recontextualized images toward a new and often unsettling conclusion. For example in his seminal work entitled Cybill Shepherd/Phone Sex, Heinecken uses a life-size cut-out figure of the actress posing in a bathing suit with a faceless man at her feet, receiver to his ear, hoping against hope for some gem of pornographic delectability. Again and again in this exhibition we come face to face with, sadly, though sometimes ecstatically, ourselves. This is a must see, so go see this show before it closes on January 18.
