Poet Wallace Stevens, in his seminal poem “Notes Toward A Supreme Fiction,” eschews a literal interpretation of anything, vying instead for a Greenbergian-like approach to art, indeed to life itself, privileging purity in abstraction over narrative. This recent exhibition at Gavlak Gallery, which includes the likes of artists including Derek Paul Boyle, Michael John Kelly, Michael Manning, Allison Miller, Aaron Sandnes  and Lily Stockman, takes as its main subject the city of the ubiquitous, though sometimes weary angels, creating works that negotiate the simultaneously seedy and brilliant landscape with an aplomb bordering on fanaticism. Yay!
