1% Contained, 2014

Julie Adler’s recent exhibition of paintings, monoprints, etchings, linocuts and more at Campbell Hall Art Gallery suggests a fiercely compelling and singular mind at work. Mining an intensely personal vein and responding to the luminous poem, Song of Myself by Walt Whitman, Adler’s interpretations of Whitman’s words expand the essential poetic impulse that fuels the truly maverick and original, excising demons, both real and imagined. Works like 1% Contained represent the landscape of imagination, skewed and strangely ecstatic, as the artist appears to be climbing either away from herself, or back in. Either way, it’s a hard won but necessary freedom. Please note that the gallery is only open by appointment. For more info: gallery@campbellhall.org.
