Gregory Michael Hernandez makes maps, composite environments, deliberate negotiations into our collective humanity as a means of locating what appears to be a seemingly and endlessly metaphoric universe. Los Angeles figures prominently here as surrogate muse; the artist explores issues of labor and immigration in the extraordinarily compelling 17-foot –long photographic collage The Angelus. The piece is a specific homage to Millet’s famous work of the same title. The image is a veritable show-stopper, sweeping in both its visual complexity and broader allegorical meaning. Like a lovelorn astronaut swiftly fallen to ground, Hernandez’ figure appears to be seeking some quietude within himself, a personal vigil, a private wake amidst the endless desert expanse.  —Eve Wood
