Curatorial Text

Perhaps the first impression that one takes from Paula Blanco’s works is the vast array of colors scattered on the canvases, which by some mystery seem to levitate beyond the whitewash walls. These works are suspended by themselves only to become a whole even if each was conceived individually. And even though all of the above is true after one’s first look, her work is way deeper than the first introduction. As we immerse ourselves in her work, we discover a world filled with hope and fear, with litter and useful things. Paula throws hand to all mediums, she’s not your typical academic artist even though she’s brilliant, no, the artist in her goes beyond, she talks to us about hope and hopelessness, determination and apathy, her quest for love and her share of disappointments, even though they were never wanted. To meddle in Paula Blanco’s work is to somehow meddle with our own interior world, we can see ourselves in those birds and their promise of limitless freedom, after all it was Bob Dylan who once said: “And for the sky there are no fences facin’ ”. The onlooker must never make the mistake to try to understand her work because her richness and last message are in themselves irrational. In the end, it is the answer that our soul finds when she realizes that in front of her are a pair of wings that can overcome any labyrinth.
