Please join Durden and Ray for the opening of “Soul Case,” an exhibition focused on
contemporary figurative painting from the perspective of Los Angeles painters.
The opening will be 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Durden and Ray, 1923
S. Santa Fe Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90021 .
The main goal of the curators Jorin Bossen and Nano Rubio was to choose work that
examines the “Soul Case” or human form. Figurative painting does not just illustrate
the body i.e. the case, but illuminates part of the subject and through that the
viewer’s immaterial essence i.e. the soul.
As painters, the curators wanted to examine similar painting practices and look to
practices that excite us from afar. The outcome is a highlight of LA’s diverse
simulations in painting that create new meanings and connections for portraying
contemporary human life. These works are formed through the lens of the Internet,
film, photography, comic books, and the many styles of art throughout history.
The curators have selected work from Tania Jazz Alvarez, Jorin Bossen, Joshua
Hagler, Sean Noyce, Atilio Pernisco, Jason Ramos, Maja Ruznic, and Erica Ryan
Stallones.
