October 15, 2017 – November 3, 2017

Curated by Louis Jacinto and Kene J. Rosa, the exhibition highlights artists – one from Southern California, one from Latin America – who are related, either by family or artistically, and exhibit their works side by side, just the way Los Angeles and Latin America are side by side.

HERE/THERE approaches PST: LA/LA is not as an exhibition of Latino or Latin American artists, but rather a focus of the exchange, collaboration and influence of the two regions on artists.

Included in this ambitious exhibition are Ave Pildas and Waleska Santiago; Martin Bustamante and Cristina Bustamante Penilla; Diane Williams and Narsiso Martinez; Yolanda Gonzalez and YOLA; Kathi Flood and Raoul de la Sota, among others.

In addition to Southern California, the other regions represented in this exhibition include Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, and Uruguay.

A performance is scheduled on the Opening, October 15, 2017 by dancer and actress Mariana Montes, wearing clothing designed by Luis Roberto Vazquez Borja. The performance will address the elimination of borders due to artists in their continuous exchange of ideas and dialogue through their artistic practice.

:::

When we first contemplated this exhibition, we sought artists – one from SouthernCalifornia, one from Latin America – who were related to exhibit their works side by side, just the way Los Angeles and Latin America are side by side.

As we approached artists many stated that although they still had family in Latin America, they were the only ones who were artists.

Then one artist informed us that although he was the only artist in his family, he had a years long standing relationship with a friend – an artist in Mexico – who, through the years had shared their artistic ideas with each other; they considered themselves brothers. It was at this point that we opened up the call for the show to include such relationships.

Then we received an inquiry from a Southern California artist who asked, “Can I submit my photos for the show even though I am not Latino? My current intern is a photographer from Brazil and we thought about participating together.” And this is how HERE/THERE came to be.

When we first heard the announcement about The Getty Foundation initiative for Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America, we never interpreted as exhibitions of Latino artists, but rather as a focus of the exchange, collaboration and influence of the two regions.

We are proud to present HERE/THERE, an exhibition showcasing pairs of artists who have roots in the two regions – Southern California and/or Latin America – and the interpersonal exchange, collaboration and influence of the two regions in their spectacular work.
