The Laband Art Gallery is pleased to present the first survey exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Carolyn Castaño. Over the past fifteen years, Castaño has worked across a range of media including drawing, collage, painting, video, and installation. Her work is known for its vibrant colors and knockout patterns that marry fluorescent hues with tropical flourishes. Castaño employs these aesthetic strategies to explore, for example, notions of gender and identity as well as particular social conditions facing women in contemporary Latin America. In 2015, Castaño was an artist-in-residence in Medellín, Colombia, where she created a project with women who were seeking support and refuge from the intense internal conflicts of the region.
