“Book Club: Going Native” isn’t your ordinary book club.
And definitely isn’t your ordinary art show.

The opening of the “Book Club: Going Native” at Durden and Ray from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 6, 2017, will include dancers moving to the rhythm of author Stephen Wright, it will include a composer’s take on the book, LA’s best bartender will stir up a drink inspired by the murderous tale and hairdressers will … well, let’s just see!

Oh, yeah, there will be visual artists as well.

“We wanted to create a conversation between different creative communities in Los Angeles,” said Steven Wolkoff, the curator of “Book Club: Going Native. “By working from the same starting point, a book, the artists in this show can build foundations for a broader creative community.”

You will enjoy the happening whether you read the dark comic novel or not. Actor and artist Kate Kelton will read excerpts at the opening anyway! But, you might want to. The New York Times said the book “is a chilling and often brilliant novel, a novel that radiates the dark, consuming energy of a black hole.”

Tom Dunn’s description of the work:
My practice involves imagery deriving from the subconscious so I was drawn to the description of the murderous hitchhiker’s tattoo and his dialogue about it with the driver in the chapter Blackwork. The tattoo, which gives the chapter its name, is described by the author as “a deliberate thwarting of the desire for representation.”
Driver: “Son of a bitch, you could get dizzy staring into that. What’s it supposed to be?”
Hitchhiker: “The inside of my head.”
Driver: “Cool.” The driver looked away, then back again. “Can’t say it looks real inviting.”
