Aftermath #4, 2014

Aftermath #4, 2014

As the poet William Butler Yeats wrote in his seminal poem, The Second Coming, “Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.” Christopher Russell understands this concept better than most. His recent exhibition, “GRFALWKV” attests to a strikingly groundless universe devoid of color where the known world has been deliberately invaded, scraped, scratched and even hacked, creating a vaguely ominous series of images. Russell has achieved an unsettling seductiveness here, yet one can’t help but wonder when considering a work like “Aftermath #4” are the hungry wolves, both literal and figurative, calling us home to the fold once and for all?
